Winding Roads of Orange Co. II (Long)

Distance: 71 miles and 3600 feet of elevation gain (barometric) Both the long and medium routes are the same today except that the long adds an extra loop to the south in the middle of the route. Both start together for about the first 10 miles as they head south along Portola Pkwy to Sand Canyon and then down Sand Canyon. This long then breaks off for a loop south to Mission Viejo and back. This includes a climb to the first peak on the profile. This long returns to Sand Canyon and rejoins the medium route. Together they tour the Turtle Rock and Newport Hills area (the 2nd peak on the profile). They then return to the Irvine area for lunch. After lunch the routes head back towards the start, but do one more loop in North Tustin which includes the final climb on the profile. As you can see by the profile, there is a fair amount of climbing, but the route never gets much above 800 feet above sea level, so the total elevation gain is not excessive.
