Distance: 32 miles and 600 feet of elevation gain (mapping software)
Today the short route is mostly different from the long and medium. It starts out with the other two routes and stays with them for the first 7 miles as they head east to Temple City. It then leaves the other two routes to ride a loop to the south down to Whittier Narrows. Here it picks up the Rio Hondo bike trail and rides that back north to El Monte. The route then heads back west to the start, stopping for lunch along the way. As you can see by the profile, there are no major climbs and about half of the grade in the second half of the ride is the gentle rise as you ride up the Rio Hondo.
