Santa Fe Dam (Long)

Distance: 54 miles and 2400 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Today the long and the medium routes are the same for the first 34 miles to lunch. From the start, they both ride directly over to the San Gabriel River trail and ride the 8 miles up the river to the Santa Fe Dam. After riding the crest of the dam (almost another 3 miles) the routes continue north along the river to Duarte. Then both routes leave the river to work their way back west through Sierra Madre and on to Pasadena for lunch. After lunch, this long splits off for a somewhat difficult climb up to the top of Lake Avenue (the highest paved street in Pasadena) before coming back down, cruising past the Rose Bowl and then rejoining the medium route for the return through Alhambra back to the start. On the profile below, the single peak at about the 40 mile mark is the post-lunch climb done by this long. If you are not sure about doing this extra loop, we suggest bringing both the long and medium route sheets so that you can decide at lunch how you are feeling.
