PIUMA

Distance: 73 miles and 5200 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Both the standard route and this extended route are the same for the first 37 miles. We start by heading out to the coast and north to Malibu. We head inland on Malibu Canyon to our featured climb of the day – Piuma. This is about a 6 mile climb rising about 1600 feet (the first peak on the profile below). After a brief downhill, the climbing continues for almost another 2 miles on Schueren up to the top of Stunt Road (the 2nd peak below). We ride down Stunt Road and then up and over another moderate climb on Mulholland Hwy to Calabasas. Here the two routes split. While the standard route stops for lunch and then heads directly back, this extended route continues north across the Valley to stop for lunch in the Porter Ranch area. After lunch, the route returns south across the Valley to rejoin the Standard Route on the return back over Sepulveda to the start. As you can see by the profile, the bulk of the climbing, except for the return over Sepulveda, is concentrated in a 13 mile stretch between mile 20 and 33. This probably makes this route a bit more difficult than last week’s trainer. On the map below, the red portion is the common route between the two routes and the blue indicates the extra loop done by this extended route.
