Ring Around the Valley (Shorter Medium)

Distance: 35 miles and 500 feet of elevation gain (mapping software)

All routes make a counterclockwise trip around the Valley – the longer the route, the larger the loop. This shorter medium route starts out with the long and medium, but after only a few miles, it splits off to head west while the longer routes make a trip north. This route heads west to rejoin the medium route for lunch. The two mediums then continue together (joined by the long route) on the loop through Balboa Park. After the Park, both mediums and the long route ride past the mural in the Tujunga Wash and then head directly back to the start at the Zoo.  Cutting out the trip to the northern Valley area eliminates much of the climbing done by the longer routes. As you can see by the profile, it is a gradual up-grade while heading west and then downhill on the way back. On the map, the green line is the unique portion of this shorter medium route and the blue is the common portion of the two medium routes.
