Distance: 38 miles and 1000 feet of elevation gain (mapping software)
All four routes today stay together for at least the first 10 miles as they head north up to Sierra Madre (the peak on the profile). This is a long gentle grade. All but the short route then head south on Santa Anita Ave down through El Monte. Just before reaching Whittier, while the longer medium heads into Whittier for lunch, this shorter medium stops for lunch in the Whittier narrows area. After lunch, this shorter medium rejoins the medium (and long) route and heads back north by riding the Upper Rio Hondo Bike Trail to its northern end and then back west to the start in Alhambra. On the map, the blue portion is the common route with the medium route and the green portion is where this shorter medium cuts off a part of the medium route. If you compare the profile with that of the medium, you can see that most of the climbing is the same except that this shorter medium cuts out a little climbing done by the medium route as it goes into Whittier for lunch.
