Distance: 31 miles and 800 feet of elevation gain (mapping software)
Today’s short route, while it travels much of the same area as the medium route, does so somewhat differently. The short skips the loop to the north ridden by both the long and medium riders and starts by heading down to Newport. While the long and medium take a coastal route down, this short makes a more inland loop down. It loops around the Back Bay and then tours the homes on the bluff above Newport Harbor before heading to Balboa. Although it rides the ferry like the other routes, it does so in the opposite direction. Once off the island, the short takes a fairly direct coastal route back to the start. There are a few relatively short hills, but note that the main peak on the profile tops out at only about 300 feet above sea level.
