Circling San Fernando – Full Century

Distance: 94 miles and 6100 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

We start by heading up Sepulveda to Mulholland Drive (the initial climb on the profile) which we take east all the way across to Cahuenga. Then it’s down into the Valley to begin our circle. We ride through Burbank and north out Glenoaks and Foothill Blvd to the northeast corner of the valley. This is a long gradual climb ending at the peak at around 37 miles on the profile. Then it is west across the valley, around Chatsworth Lake and then south to Calabasas. There is a short but sharp climb before Calabasas (the spike at mile 56) and then we do a final climb on Mulholland Hwy as we leave Calabasas (the peak at mile 66). From there we head out Mulholland Hwy to cross over to the coast on Malibu Canyon. We then complete our circle by heading back to Santa Monica along PCH and then inland on San Vicente back to the start. As you can see on the profile, the biggest single climb is the initial climb up Sepulveda although the final climb on Mulholland Hwy takes you to the highest point of the day. Most of the climbing is not really difficult — it’s just that there is quite a bit of it, adding up to about 6000 feet. But remember – once you are over the last peak, the final 30 miles are fairly easy.
