Turnbull Revisited (Long)

Distance: 78 miles and 4400 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

The long and the medium are identical today except for a ride up San Gabriel Canyon and back down tacked on to the long. Both routes start by heading into Whittier and climbing over Turnbull Canyon (the first spike on the profile). Together they continue east and north through Hacienda Heights and Walnut and then go up and over Grand Ave (the small spike at about 25 miles on the profile). After lunch in the Covina area, both routes head north to Azusa and the northern end of the San Gabriel River Bike Trail. Here this long splits off to head up San Gabriel Canyon on Hwy 39 to the East Fork and along the East Fork to the Williams Camp Store for a break. (NOTE: the store may or may not be open – plan accordingly) The long then retraces its route back down the canyon to rejoin the medium on the San Gabriel River Trail. Together they follow the San Gabriel River Trail south back to the start. This includes a trip over the Santa Fe Dam. On the map, the blue portion is the common route of both the long and medium and the red indicates the additional loop ridden by the long. On the profile, the large rise between 35 miles and 60 miles is the trip up and down the San Gabriel Canyon which is obviously somewhat higher than the trip over Turnbull and almost doubles the total elevation gain done by the medium route.
