Sand Canyon Trainer

Distance: 70 miles and 5200 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

We start in Brentwood and head directly out to the valley over Sepulveda (the first peak on the profile below). We cross to the north side of the valley and over the hump into Newhall (the small peak at mile 25). We ride up Placerita Canyon which is gently up, but not a serious climb. Then we start the main climb of the day – Sand Canyon. There are two peaks to this climb – the two peaks between mile 35 and 40. But once we are over the top of the 2nd peak, we have a long downhill on Little Tujunga and this continues all the way across the valley. Our final climb of the day is a return over Sepulveda (the last peak on the profile) but the climb from the Valley is a little easier than the climb over to the Valley in the morning. There are several climbs today, but the Sand Canyon climb is the only really big one. It is a long time before lunch on the route and no food or water is available on Sand Canyon and Little Tujunga, so come prepared.
