La Tuna Melt (Long)

Distance: 53- miles and 2900 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Today the long splits off from the other routes after only a couple of miles. It heads northwest through Burbank and out to Sun Valley where it picks up La Tuna Canyon and makes the 4 mile climb to the top (the first peak on the profile below). It then comes down through Montrose and on to the Rose Bowl area where it joins the medium route. Together they head over to Altadena and the climb up “Christmas Tree Lane” (the 2nd peak on the profile below). After that, it is downhill to lunch in Pasadena and mostly downhill after lunch back to the start. The last few miles are a pleasant ride through Griffith Park. The climb up La Tuna is long, but not too steep. The climb up Christmas Tree Lane is somewhat steeper, but not very long. It is also shaded by the trees. Unfortunately, the Christmas lights will not be on.
