Hollywood Sign Ride (Long)

Distance: 44 miles and 2600 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Both routes stay together for the first 10 miles up to the sign. This is a fairly direct route east through Hollywood and then north up into the Hollywood Hills and up to the sign. Portions of this are very steep, but on low traffic residential streets. The last 1.4 miles up to the sign are on a closed (but poorly maintained) road.  After viewing the sign, the routes start back down the way they came up. Back down in Hollywood, the two routes split. While the medium heads straight back to the start, this long adds a loop out to the Valley and back.  This portion of the route is actually part of a route designed by former club Vice President Steve Bowen to visit several Los Angeles Lakes. First you circle Silver Lake and then head out to the Valley through Griffith Park. You pass Toluca Lake (although you can’t see it) and then climb up Multiview up to Mulholland Dr which you take west to Franklin Canyon. You ride down Franklin Canyon (past your third lake) and back to the start. If you add the view of Lake Hollywood you had up at the sign, you have visited 4 lakes today. As you can see by the profile, this extra loop adds a small climb in Griffith Park (the little peak at mile 24) and a larger climb up to Mulholland. The initial climb up to the sign will still be by far the most difficult climb of the day.
