Santa Anita Canyon (Medium)

Distance: 31 miles and 2400 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

All three routes are different today and diverge almost immediately. This medium route heads up Santa Anita Canyon  to Chantry Flats and is really the only route for which today’s rides are named. The route starts by heading directly east over to Santa Anita Canyon and heading up. Before the climb, you pass the County Arboretum and an area known for its peacocks. A few years ago when we rode this one, we must have seen 10 to 15 of them lounging about. The climb up to Chantry is about 5 miles (with the steepest portion in the first mile). As you can see by the profile, it is the only climb of the day, but is about 1500 feet of gain – quite a bit in only 5 miles).  After a break at Chantry, we come back down and head to lunch in Pasadena. After lunch, it’s a fairly direct route back to the start.
