Distance: 52 miles and 1500 feet of elevation gain (barometric)
All four routes today stay together for at least the first 10 miles as they head north up to Sierra Madre (the first peak on the profile). This is a long gentle grade. All but the short route then head south on Santa Anita Ave down through El Monte. Just before reaching Whittier, while the long does an extra loop (and hill), this medium heads directly into Whittier for a loop in Whittier and a stop for lunch. After lunch, the medium rejoins the long route and heads back north by riding the Upper Rio Hondo Bike Trail to its northern end and then back west to the start in Alhambra. On the map, the red portion is the common route with the long and the blue is the unique loop ridden by the medium in Whittier. If you compare the profile with that of the long, you can see that most of the climbing is the same except that this medium cuts out a major hill just before lunch.
