South Bay Typical (Medium)

Distance: 38 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain (mapping software)

The long and medium routes are much the same today except that the long does some extra climbing on the Palos Verdes Peninsula before heading to San Pedro for lunch, while this medium takes a relatively flat trip to San Pedro. Both routes start with a loop through the neighborhood on the north side of the peninsula and then a trip around the golf course to Malaga Cove. Here the routes split. While the long does its climbing, this medium continues around the peninsula on Palos Verdes Drive to Palos Verdes Drive East. Although there are some hills in this section (including the long grade up past the Trump golf course), they are much less than the climbs on the long route. At Palos Verdes Drive East the long and medium routes come back together. Both routes proceed to San Pedor for lunch. After lunch, both routes stay together as they proceed back north along the edge of Palos Verdes and then down into Torrance for a relatively easy return to the start. But watch out for Doris – a short but sharp hill near the end (It’s that tiny blip at mile 35) Although there is much less climbing on this medium than the long, like the long,  most of the climbing is in the first half.
