Fullbore For Fillmore (Valley Return)

Distance: 119 miles and 7200 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Both options are the same for the first 97 miles. We start with the fairly easy climb over Sepulveda and across the valley and over the Old Road to Valencia (the highest peak on the profile below). Then it’s the long flat run to Fillmore for lunch (it may be flat, but is often into a headwind). After lunch, its over Grimes Canyon to Moorpark (the peak at about 60 miles on the profile)  This is the toughest climb of the day but even it is not too steep. We take the alternative to Norwegian Grade up and over to Thousand Oaks where we pick up Mulholland Hwy (which has a few small hills including the one at about 95 miles). When you get to the intersection with Old Topanga, you make your choice. This Valley Return continues Mulholland into the Valley. You take the usual “Wells Drive” route across the Valley and go back over Sepulveda (the final peak on the profile) to finish the day.  Although this option is a few miles longer and has a bit more elevation gain, the two options are pretty much the same. Your choice of option will probably be based on weather and desired traffic patterns. As you can see by the profile, there are numerous climbs, but you never climb higher than 1800 feet above sea level. The map with the Coastal Return option shows the difference between the two routes.
