Straight Cow Mountain (Long)

Distance: 56 miles and 2300 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Today the long and medium routes are much the same except that the long adds an extra loop in the middle. Both start out by heading east to Baldwin Park. At about the 12 mile mark the two routes split. This long continues east to Covina before turning south to Walnut and then heading back west to Hacienda Heights. Here the long rejoins the medium route. Both routes then do the climb over Turnbull and down into Whittier for lunch. After lunch, it is a relatively easy 15 miles back to the start. Besides the extra miles, this long adds an extra climb over Grand Ave. (the peak at mile 21 in the profile below), but the climb over Turnbull is still the principal climb of the day.
